2008 Annual Meeting and Representative Assembly

Just click above to hear and see some of the speeches that Bret and I heard at the RA in Washington, including the
National Teacher of the Year and the Educational Support Professional of the Year

Lily Eskelsen was elected Vice-president....and we are sure she will be President of the NEA in short order.

More videos from NEA in 2008

including others who were elected...but I like Lily best.

One of the highlights of the Annual Meeting is the Human and Civil Rights Awards Dinner.

Every year NEA directs a Human and Civil Rights Awards program to honor individuals and affiliates who stand up and defend human and civil rights. The program began as an activity of the American Teachers Association and in 1966, when the ATA merged with the NEA, the two organizations agreed that NEA would continue to sponsor the traditional Awards Dinner. The awards program continues the ATA tradition by bringing together human and civil rights champions whose leadership and example ensure that human and civil rights will be available to our children and their children.

This year I can share with you those presented with awards in video. When I attended my first RA in 2006, it was hard to even get transcripts of speeches. Isn't the internet amazing.

Older, but still a special treat...

See VIDEO: NEA Secretary-Treasurer Lily Eskelsen
New York RA 2007 - April 26, 2007

Eskelsen, in a speech laced with humor, talked about the important role unions of education professionals can play in turning the tide against dangerous policies at the state and federal levels.

Your benefits will be reduced by the Windfall Elimination Provision as will benefits you may have received from your spouse by the Government Penstion Offset law. These particularly effect you if teaching is your second career. Legislation continues to be introduced and supported by NEA and CTA to change these provisions.
